Lukáš Novák
Lukáš Novák (1987) is a contemporary artist and conceptual glassmaker whose work draws on the tradition of North Bohemian glassmaking, which he carries forward toward current questions of visuality, identity, and material culture. He works primarily with optical glass, which he uses to create situations oscillating between formal precision, optical illusion, and visual mystification.
After graduating from UMPRUM in Prague, he began his career as a designer of utilitarian objects, vases, tableware, and lighting for international and leading Czech brands. Over time, he expanded his practice beyond design and began using traditional glassmaking techniques to explore contemporary social issues as well as timeless questions related to human existence. His work combines a conceptual approach with masterful craftsmanship and is often characterized by subtle irony and poetic sensitivity.
A distinctive element of Novák’s work is his treatment of light and optical illusion. Through experiments with optical glass, he explores the limits of the medium, pays homage to Czech craft traditions, and seeks to redefine glass as a material capable of carrying both personal and societal meanings.
Lukáš Novák has presented his work at numerous international exhibitions and showcases. His pieces are held in private collections in the Czech Republic and abroad, including the collection of the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Dresden.
