Pavla Malinová (1985) is a prominent voice in contemporary Central European painting, known for a visual language that moves between figuration and abstraction. Her paintings combine saturated colours, layered spatial compositions and mythological motifs, creating imagery that is both symbolic and psychologically resonant. Her work explores uncertainty, ambiguity and the relationship between emotion, imagination and symbolism. Malinová has presented her work internationally, including at Frieze London (2022), Art Brussels (2020) and the Czech Center New York (2025).

Freedom of Speech belongs to a series of works by the artist in which the written word is regarded as the most important free medium. The figure conceals her face behind an owl enclosed within a book, its pages taking the place of wings. The owl is a recurring motif in Pavla Malinová’s work, symbolising wisdom. A possible mushroom cloud evokes a pervasive sense of fear generated by media politics.
