Philip Hinge

Philip Hinge (b. 1988, Seattle, WA) is an artist, curator, and independent project-space operator based in Ridgewood, New York. He received an MFA in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University. His work has been exhibited internationally at venues including International Waters, Martos Gallery, Brennan & Griffin, 106 Green, and A.D. in New York; 427 in Riga; Mélange in Cologne; mcg21xoxo in Chiba; Plague Space in Krasnodar; Final Hot Desert in Utah; Freddy in Harrison, NY; and Lower Cavity in Holyoke, MA.

Alongside his studio practice, Hinge founded and directs two independent exhibition projects: Catbox Contemporary (Ridgewood, NY) and darkZone (New Jersey). Since 2017, Catbox Contemporary has presented exhibitions both within and beyond Hinge’s apartment, including projects at Alyssa Davis Gallery (New York), Hot Wheels Athens (Athens), Felix Art Fair, and Baitball (Polignano a Mare, Italy). darkZone was established in 2019 in the basement of Hinge’s childhood home and operated there until 2022, when the property was sold.

Hinge was also a founding member of A.D. (New York), where he served as director and curator from 2019 to 2021. In addition to his curatorial work, he regularly writes exhibition reviews and conducts interviews with artists and cultural practitioners.
