Matyáš Maláč

Matyáš Maláč (b. in 1997) studied at the at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (Painting Studio II, led by Vladimír Skrepl). He completed residencies with Justin Fitzpatrick at the Visiting Artist Studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, and at the Iceland University of the Arts in Reykjavík.

Maláč became a prominent and distinctive figure on the Czech art scene even before his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, with work that reflected his interest in exploring the possibilities of contemporary pictorial abstraction.

In recent years, Maláč has focused on questions of free will and the search for definitions of individuality within digital, political, environmental, and post-humanist contexts. In his work, the formal aspects are always subordinate to conceptual and thematic concerns, making the interpretation of his pieces complex and open-ended.

Maláč has presented his work in several solo exhibitions, including: Love Your Data: The Life of Paranormie, Karpuchina Gallery (2021); Viewpoint Vomiters (with Olbram Pavlíček), City Surfer (2022); Synthetic Spells (with Aleš Zapletal), POP-UP Gallery AVU (2023–2024); The Romantics Were Prompted, Polansky Gallery (2025). His work has also been featured in numerous group exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad, including at MeetFactory, Karlin Studios, Holešovická šachta, Berlinskej model, as well as the Brno House of Arts, the C. Rockefeller Center for the Contemporary Arts in Dresden, AQB Budapest, Clubclub Gallery in Vienna, and No Moon in New York.
