Jan Kaláb
Jan Kaláb (1978) has distinguished himself on the international scene as a significant figure in contemporary abstract art. His roots go back to his pioneering role in Czech street art of the 1990s. He organically merged his experience with graffiti with academic training in drawing and painting, which led him to a highly sophisticated visual language situated between painting and object. His practice reflects a continuous evolution from urban experimentation toward thoughtful, formally precise artistic work.
Kaláb’s aesthetic draws from the traditions of geometric abstraction and Op Art, which he develops through the organic shapes and color gradients characteristic of his works. Thematically, his practice is grounded in the study of natural phenomena and elemental forms that serve as metaphors for the fundamental structural principles of the world. His custom-made stretchers – often with organic or even experimental contours – define the final shape of the artwork and underscore his distinctive engagement with space. Kaláb does not seek merely to visually represent familiar motifs; rather, his aim is to open new perspectives on universal aesthetics by pushing the traditional formal limits of painting.
A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Jan Kaláb is today among the Czech artists with the strongest international presence. His works have been exhibited in numerous world cities, including London, Rome, Berlin, Miami, New York, and Los Angeles. They are also represented in foreign institutional collections, such as the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in the United States, the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro, the DEJI Art Museum in China, and the Osan Museum in South Korea.
