Alex Červený
Alex Červený (*1963) has been building an extensive and complex visual world for more than four decades, grounded in drawing as its foundation. Born in São Paulo, he initially focused on print making techniques, developing a deep relationship with the line as a bearer of both structure and narrative. On this basis, he gradually expanded his practice to include painting, sculpture, and illustration, creating a body of work that combines technical precision with imaginative freedom.
His compositions unfold as visual chronicles inhabited by mythological figures, allegorical characters, and architectural fragments set within shifting temporal planes. References to literature, religious symbolism, and popular culture intertwine in densely layered scenes that invite sustained and attentive viewing. Although storytelling is central to his practice, meaning remains open, oscillating between historical quotation and personal mythology.
His work has been presented on major international platforms, including the São Paulo Biennial and the Sydney Biennale. In 2023, the Pinacoteca de São Paulo organized a major retrospective exhibition of his work, reaffirming his position within contemporary Brazilian art. Červený’s works are held in the collections of institutions such as the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, and the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in Paris.
