Contemporary art at the 93rd KODL Gallery auction

28 April – 25 May 2025
KODL Gallery | Žofín Palace
Contemporary art has in recent years become an integral part of auction offerings. This confirms the growing interest in the work of contemporary artists.
Contemporary art is also strongly represented at the 93rd auction of Galerie KODL, supported by KodlContemporary. Jan Kaláb, with his work Burning Ellipse 522, blurs the lines between painting and object – the shape and color energy of the piece acts like a pulsating organism. Alžběta Jungrová, in her black-and-white photograph Layers Behind the Curtain, explores both visible and hidden layers of reality and their relationship to personal and collective memory. In his minimalist painting Untitled, Jan Poupě builds a space of inner focus, in which geometry serves as a quiet, meditative language. Alongside these works, the auction also features Jiří Černický’s canvas Free Charons. The main motif is the god Charon, whose figure undergoes a radical reinterpretation in Černický’s vision. The artist lets him freely surf the waves of the river Styx, subtly opening questions of fear, death, and transcendence in the contemporary world through gentle subversion. Mycelium belongs to the early, yet already clearly distinctive works of multimedia artist Jakub Nepraš. The combination of projection and engraved drawing into finely sandblasted glass creates a unique symbiosis of light, material, and moving image. With the large-format still life Petřín Magnolias, Jan Mikulka once again confirms his position as one of the most internationally recognized Czech painters of today. The painting is not only a visual tribute to painting tradition, but also a sensitive reflection on how we collect, preserve, and aestheticize fleeting moments of our lives and human existence.
The pre-auction exhibition runs until May 24 at Galerie KODL. The traditional auction is complemented by the option to bid online via the portal www.artslimit.com. Bidding limits on this site are already open, and live online bidding begins at 12 noon on May 25, simultaneously with the in-person auction.
