Martin Janecký

Martin Janecký (1980) is one of the world’s most recognized glass sculptors. He mainly gained experience in the United States, where he studied at Pilchuck Glass School under the tutelage of prominent artists Richard Royal and William Morris. He subsequently was a highly sought-after instructor at various schools of arts and crafts from Alaska to Australia. In 2019 he established his glass studio, Janecký Studio, on Prague’s Kampa Island. His works can be found in public and private collections at home and abroad, and he has exhibited at museums and galleries around the world. His perfect mastery of the craft and strong artistic sensibilities are immediately apparent in his sculptures. He works with a technique that has been mastered by just a few people around the world, “inside bubble sculpting,” during which he manually shapes the hot glass bubble. Another of Janecký’s techniques is the cast glass sculpture, which allows him to work with larger formats while preserving the details of the original work. Using modern technologies, he can create sculptures of a much larger size, meaning he can work not just with galleries but also in the public space. Janecký’s most common sculptures are heads and busts of people that reflect his interest in ancient cultures, Baroque and Neoclassical sculptural portraits, and the work of the greatest early modern master, Auguste Rodin. By their overall tone, Janecký’s works allow us to experience his own thoughts and moods, meaning that they are essentially self-portraits even if they do not bear his physical form.
