Jakub Nepraš
Jakub Nepraš (1981) is one of the Czech Republic’s most distinctive contemporary new media artists. He studied monumental art under Aleš Veselý before switching to new media with Veronika Bromová and Michal Bielický, under whom he fully developed his interest in multimedia work. A key role is played in his work by “video sculptures” – complex compositions of the moving image that reflect our relationship to technology, nature, and contemporary civilization. These video objects often subject the tenets of contemporary society to critical examination, an example being Visibility, which Nepraš created for Prague City Gallery’s Art for the City project. At the same time, he also creates monumental works for public spaces. A typical characteristic of his work is the combination of natural and technological elements: for instance, he will use real pieces of plants or other organic matter that, combined with digital animation, create remarkable hybrids, so-called superorganisms. Jakub Nepraš regularly exhibits in the Czech Republic and abroad; besides exhibitions he has also appeared at international fairs and festivals such as ARS Electronica, Transmediale Berlin, Expo 2010 Shanghai, and Expo 2021 Dubai, among others.
