Adam Štech

Painter and sculptor Adam Štech (1980) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under Vladimír Skrepl and Jiří Sopko. In 2011, his paintings earned him the Critics’ Award for Young Painting. Štech’s paintings and sculptures possess clear references to historical tendencies in art. His primary source of inspiration comes from the Cubist era, manifested in particular in his deconstruction of the image’s planes and surfaces into completely new and unexpected scenes. But he also combines Baroque, Expressionist, Surrealist or other periods or movements. More recently, he has expanded his repertoire to include mosaic images that shift his Cubist “multi-perspective” approach onto a new level. Humor is his main thing, and in his works it is rare to find something other than a smilingly familiar scene or well-known individual placed into an unexpected situation and context. Thanks to his sophisticated artistic approach, however, the scenes retain their depth and seriousness and never slip into caricature. Adam Štech exhibits in the Czech Republic and abroad. Recent showings include the exhibitions houellebecq! at the DOX Center for Contemporary Art (2024) and Deviant Dichotomy at the Ascaso Gallery in Miami (2022). Past solo exhibitions include Butterfly Effect? at Galerie Rudolfinum (2013). His works can be found in the collections of the Klatovy/Klenová Gallery, the Antonio Ascaso Collection, COLLETT Prague | Munich, the Robert Runták Collection, and the collection of the Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation.
